Taylor Swift's 'Hunger Games' Song 'Safe and Sound' Debuts Online (LISTEN)

Put the hackiest sentence mixing Taylor Quick, 'Hunger Games' fans and odds being in your favor here. Taylor Quick -- the audio just like drawing unicorns in the notebook, within the simplest possible way -- features a song on soundtrack for 'The Hunger Games,' which is presently available via iTunes (even though official release date states 12 ,. 26). Referred to as 'Safe and Appear,' the mournful track isn't your typical Tay-tay fare -- no less than in comparison to some couple of from the rollicking singles and far much deeper reduces 'Speak Now.' (What?) Taking into consideration the somber tone of 'The Hunger Games,' hardly a big surprise, however when you appear like mashing-up 'Long Live' (a.k.a. DRAGONS!) with footage from 'The Hunger Games' trailer, we are not gonna stop you. Give consideration to 'Safe and Sound' (featuring Civil Wars) ahead. 'The Hunger Games' is going in theaters on March 23, 2012. Expect 'Safe and Sound' to dominate Top-40 radio between from time to time. 'Men in Black 3' Trailer: Will Smith Time-Jumps Into the Past to Save Tommy Lee Jones

.post-content img {display:none;} The production of 'Men in Black 3' was besieged with everything from budgetary issues to trailer issues. As in: Will Smith's mega-trailer was forced to move off the SoHo street in Manhattan that it was parked on during shooting because of neighbor complaints. The 'Men in Black 3' trailer trailer doesn't appear to be as big of a problem on first glance. The under two-minute tease reminds you of the 'MIB' world -- aliens walk among us, Smith makes it look "gooood" -- while also setting up the plot of the threequel: Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) has actually been "dead for over 40 years" (SFX: thunderclap), so Agent J (Smith) must go back in time to save him. It's like 'Fringe'! But without Pacey. Starring Smith, Jones, Emma Thompson and Josh Brolin as the best Tommy Lee Jones impersonator this side of Las Vegas, 'Men In Black 3' (in 3D, natch) arrives in theaters on May 25, 2012. You've Been Trumped

A Montrose Pictures presentation of a Bell Rock production. Produced by Richard Phinney. Directed by Anthony Baxter. Written by Richard Phinney, Baxter. With: Donald Trump, Michael Forbes, Molly Forbes, Susan Munro, Donald Trump Jr., Sarah Malone, David Milne, Paul O'Connor, Martin Ford, Ian Francis, David McCue.Anthony Baxter's "You've Been Trumped"takes stock of what happens when a brash celebrity billionaire runs roughshod over geographically pristine foreign turf. Familiarity may breed reluctant acceptance of blustery, cartoonishly self-promoting mogul Donald Trump on American network television, but exposure to the tycoon on a land-grabbing rampage through Scotland breeds more varied responses, including contempt. Stateside success for this somewhat uneven, "Roger and Me"-style docu will depend on U.S. auds' ability to identify with global class-consciousness, their tolerance for occasionally touchy-feely environmentalist sentiment and their willingness to stomach the real-world consequences of Trump's bombastic territorialism. Excerpted TV reports from 2007 lay out Trump's goals in usurping acres of ecologically unspoiled real estate in northeastern Scotland (described by preservationists as a wholly singular "mosaic of habitats") to build two pricey, state-of-the-art golf courses, a swanky complex of 1,500 townhouses, and a luxury hotel. The political situation perfectly parallels that of Bill Forsythe's fictional 1983 lark "Local Hero" (scenes of which are intercut here), wherein recalcitrant Scottish eccentrics successfully thwart oilmen's attempts to buy the very same spectacular coastline property. The docu's grimmer picture, related by interviewees like Green Party politician Martin Ford and chronicled in news clips, finds the national government, wooed by promises of job creation and a lucrative tourist trade, overturning the anti-Trump decision of town elders and even threatening the use of "compulsory purchase orders" (the Scottish equivalent of "eminent domain") to force the hands of homeowners who refuse to sell. The filmmakers unabashedly side with the holdouts, chief among them Trump's main nemesis, Michael Forbes (whose picture Trump sarcastically displays to David Letterman), along with neighbors Susan Munro and David Milne, who are given cameras to record the Trump organization's boundary-encroaching acts of provocation. Trump's team includes Donald Trump Jr., development spokesperson Sarah Malone and head greenskeeper Paul O'Connor. But it must be said that helmer Baxter, in choosing an ideal villain, is met more than halfway by Trump himself, who seizes every opportunity to unfairly disparage longtime residents during press conferences and in absurd photo ops where he is always flanked by two work-for-hire bagpipers. He proclaims his expansionist ambitions on the Golf Channel, no less, and describes Forbes' wooden sheds, a site that fits the rugged landscape, as "a terribly maintained, slum-like pigsty" apparently unfit for the sensitive eyes of well-to-do hotel guests. Collectivist in spirit, this mostly entertaining film lacks an official host or voiceover narration, which first works swimmingly but eventually becomes too diffuse. Even after the bulldozers, steam shovels and dumptrucks arrive, much remains unresolved as Trump departs for his 2011 presidential bid.Camera (color, HD), Baxter, Susan Munro, David Milne; editor, William Rice; music, Jonsi, Sigur Ros; sound, Paul Langwade; animation, Fifty Nine Prod. Reviewed on DVD, NY, Oct. 30, 2011. (In Hamptons, Vancouver film festivals.) Running time: 96 MIN. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Yahoo Fields Bids For 20% Stake In Company From Potential Partners

Yahoo has fielded offers this week from at least three bidders seeking a stake of about 20% of the company, the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg reported, and the company’s directors will likely discuss those offers at a regularly scheduled board meeting Wednesday in Sunnyvale, Calif. Bidders includeprivate-equity firm TPG Capital and a group consisting of Silver Lake Partners, Microsoft Corp. and others. Separately the Chinese online companyAlibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Softbank Corp. are looking to buy back Yahoo’s 40% stake in Alibaba and 35% stake in Yahoo Japan, sources said. Yahoo is also expected to receive an update on a continuing strategic review of the company at Wednesday’s board meeting. Yahoo would like to strike a deal on the minority stake sale by the end of the year, but failing that alternatives will be considered. The bids received this week place a per-share value on Yahoo of between $16 and $18, the sources said. Yahoo seeks a slightly higher price. The aforementioned firms have signed confidentiality agreements that limit their potential purchase to a minority stake. Bain, Blackstone and other firms including Providence Equity Partners and Hellman & Friedman have not signed confidentiality agreements with Yahoo because it would prevent them from going after the whole company. Additionally, Thomas H. Lee Partners is investigating an offer for Yahoo’s U.S. operations such as Yahoo Finance and Yahoo News and an Internet advertising business, other people familiar with the matter said.

Golden Globe challengers for television

The Globes get first crack at praising new fall Television shows, but they are available in second towards the Emmys if this involves spring debuts. The way these newcomers fare against 'Boardwalk Empire,' 'Good Wife,' 'Modern Family' and 'Glee'?Bet on Thrones(Cinemax)Precursor: "Rome"Why it could: The pay cabler's much-anticipated adaptation of George R.R. Martin's best-selling books would be a large success early in the year, spiking the fantasy milieu with gritty human drama. On the other hand, the genre is not for everybody, a smaller amount the show's penchant for graphic sex and violence.Otherwise the large one: Viewer favorite Peter Dinklage's portrayal of cagey outsider Tyrion Lannister has gained him an Emmy.An upbeat opinion: Mary McNamara, La Occasions: "An excellent and thundering number of political and mental intrigue bristling with vivid figures, mix-hatched with enticing plotlines and seasoned having a a little fantasy." * * * The Killing(AMC)Precursor: ABC's "Murder One," which initially gambled using the one-situation/one-season construct. Why it could: Moody North American atmospherics, a twisty murder and compelling figures added up to and including water cooler spring hit for AMC. On the other hand, red-colored herrings within the plot did not always please fans nor did the growing season-ending episode.Otherwise the large one: Mireille Enos obtained because the series' thoughtful, melancholy lead investigator, while Joel Kinnaman as her enigmatic, tart-tongued partner grew to become an admirer favorite. An upbeat opinion: Alessandra Stanley, NY Occasions: "Frightening and suspenseful, however in a subdued, meditative way that's in some way even more chilling." * * * Homeland(Showtime)Precursor: "24" for that propulsive feeling of a threat within our midst, combined with the mental suspense of "Rubicon."Why it could: A timely show about the price of hypervigilance within the Fight against Terror, it combines thriller inteligence with acute character study. On the other hand, the up-and-comer batch of dramas is strong this season, and also the popular holdovers ("Boardwalk Empire," "The Great Wife") showed tough endurance.Otherwise the large one: Claire Danes, being an intensely committed intelligence analyst, and Damian Lewis, because the coming back war hero she suspects of sinister doings, are submiting memorable work every week.An upbeat opinion: Matt Zoller Seitz, Salon: "The very best new show from the fall." * * * Enlightened(Cinemax)Precursor: Phone self-destructive side of well-meaning enhancement, "Samantha Who" and "The Brand New Adventures of Old Christine."Why it could: Edgy yet understanding, it stands for HBO's stature as a spot for offbeat, culturally relevant comedy, while offering a killer star turn from Laura Dern. On the other hand, the humor may be too brittle and spread for those tastes -- and it is not necessarily a comedy.Otherwise the large one: It's difficult to deny the pressure of character that Dern is here now, a potent combo of pinwheeling eyes, proper gamesmanship and hair trigger temperament. An upbeat opinion: Robert Lloyd, La Occasions: "Whitened and Dern may have settled for lampooning a particular strain of spiritual striving and also the blindness the convert mistakes for sight. But they are out for some thing.Inch * * * New Girl(Fox)Precursor: The twentysomething camaraderie of "Buddies," however with the 3 women concentrated into one kooky charmer. Why it could: Fueled through the star energy of Zooey Deschanel's winning lead perf along with a blessedly raunch-less method of dating humor, the show continues to be the breakout sitcom hit from the fall. On the other hand, by opting for oblong laughs instead of sporty guffaws, it runs the chance of not stimulating all tastes.Otherwise the large one: Deschanel is year's It Girl, fighting the restrictions of 1-lining sitcom convention with refreshingly off-kilter scene-stealing along with a charming inner light. An upbeat opinion: Matt Roush, TV Guide: "Everything about 'New Girl,' from her wacky co-stars towards the exclusively cool writing, is irresistible." * * * GOLDEN GLOBES RACETops in tubthumps? Kali Hawk Has 'High School Plan' for Hollywood Success

Kali Hawk Has 'High School Plan' for Hollywood Success By Simi Horwitz November 25, 2011 Kali Hawk has little doubt her "Hollywood High School Plan" paved the way for the success she is enjoying, which includes a featured role in the film "Answers to Nothing," starring Dane Cook, Barbara Hershey, and other well-known actors."For my 'freshman' year, I knew I was going to do extra work and modeling," she says. "By my 'sophomore' year, I was going to have speaking parts in a film. By my 'junior' year, I would have supporting roles. And by my 'senior' year, I was going to be co-starring in a major movie with major actors." It worked every step of the way, she asserts. Indeed, by her "senior" year, she was co-starring with Vince Vaughn in "Couples Retreat." The plan pressured her to take action, "especially when I was coming to the end of the year and had not achieved what I set out to do," she recalls. It helped her to remain committed, focused, and determined. Hawk further boosted her ambitions by reading biographies of successful actors to learn from their experiences, and most central, she always surrounds herself with positive and supportive people. Asked what happens when things don't go according to plan, she insists that as long as you keep your eye on the prize, you learn to work around the bumps in the road. The NY City native always knew she wanted to act, entering high school when she was 12 and at 16 matriculating at SUNY at Purchase, where she majored in musical theater. At the same time, she was honing her skills as a singer and a guitar player; when she first arrived in L.A., it was to launch her career in music. Not one to limit her prospects, she checked out Craigslist for possible acting gigs and landed a stint in the indie "Issues." Other roles followed.Hawk acknowledges that auditions are nerve-racking but does fairly well at them, though the most successful are those where she is having fun. It's also essential to remain open. "And even if I don't get the role I'm auditioning for, if I keep myself open, then I may get another job they are casting later," she says. Digging Deeper To nail a role, the first order of business is visualizing that person, says Hawk, who does so by finding someone she knows who is reminiscent of the character. It's the starting point, "the suit I put on," which in turn leads to the inner work, such as motivation and objectives, she notes. In the end, she releases all of it and allows the director's adjustments and her experiences with the other actors to take over and inform what transpires. The role she is most proud ofindeed, the one she found most challengingis the self-hating young African-American she plays in "Answers to Nothing," a film about emotionally disenfranchised individuals set against the backdrop of a child abduction case. "Of course, I had reservations, though I'm aware not every character is going to be nice or necessarily reflect my views or values," Hawk points out. "It was very important for me to know that this character would take a journey and learn that her views are not okay. The director agreed with me, and I trusted him. This is my first real significant role in a dramatic film. This character has deep psychological issues that forced me to look into my own life. I was super scared. But I feel I can stand by that performance."Until this role, Hawk's performances were mostly comic. Her optimistic, enthusiastic, and sunny temperament is more suited to comedy, she says. Hawk, who has a background in improvisation and has worked with The Groundlings, is studying dramatic acting with coach Ivana Chubbuck. She realizes comedy and drama carry distinct demands and force her to tap into different aspects of herself, with dramatic roles requiring deeper self-analysis. "It's psychoanalysis of the character and me," she says. "If a character has a problem with her father, I have to look at my relationship with my father. I'd like to do more dramatic roles, and I'm focusing my attention on that right now."She'd also like to try her hand at action-adventure and remakes of "Love Story" "When Harry Met Sally," and "Pretty Woman." Julie Taymor Blasts Bono, The Edge Over 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' Lawsuit

A week after Julie Taymor filed a lawsuit in NY claiming Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark infringed on her creative input, an interview with the Broadway director finds her calling out collaborators Bono and The Edge.our editor recommends'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' Producers Fire Back at Julie Taymor'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark': Another Cast Member Injured Esquire reports Taymor blames the U2 duo, who referred to her "exhausted" and "overwrought," for false characterizations that led to her removal from the pricey musical, which she directed and co-wrote before an altered version officially debuted on Broadway. "There's no doubt by the end of February, when I felt all of this stuff happening, that I was exhausted by that, but not by the show and not by the inspiration that I was getting from the actors," she said of her March departure. "What was exhausting was the fact that the producers were absent... Those people weren't there, so how does Bono know? I'm sorry." ANALYSIS: Can Julie Taymor Shut Down 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark'? Taymor also attempts to clarify the circumstances of her dismissal, which she maintains came as a complete shock to her and had nothing to do with an ultimatum about altering the show. "This thing that I refused to do the big changes and so they let me go? No. There wasn't [an ultimatum]," Taymor said. "That was not something that was brought up to me. " Instead, Taymor poses that making her take the fall for the beleaguered production -- which included six delayed openings and five injured cast members during her tenure -- was the only way for the producers to distance Spider-Man from the bad press. STORY: Julie Taymor Sues 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' for Infringing Her Creative Input "I think that those were important to paint a picture of a director who you needed to release in order to make this big change," she said. "I had to be characterized that way in order for something to happen." Taymor initially filed an arbitration claim against the show after her departure, claiming she was owed more than $500,000 in royalties. Of this new lawsuit, her attorney says, "Ms. Taymor regrets that the producers' actions have left her no choice but to resort to legal recourse to protect her rights." Some Guy Who Kills People

A Sum 10 Films, Fight of Ireland Films and Litn-Up Films production. Produced by Ryan Levin, Michael Wormser, Micah Goldman. Executive producer, John Landis. Co-producers, Jack Perez, Kristin Holt. Directed by Jack Perez. Script, Ryan Levin. With: Kevin Corrigan, Craig Bostwick, Karen Black, Leo Fitzpatrick, Ariel Gade, Lucy Davis, Eric Cost, Lou Beatty Junior., Janie Haddad, Christopher May, Niko Nicotera, Jonathan Fraser, Britain Spellings, Lindsay Hollister, Regan Burns.Getting together slasher horror, delusional-superhero seriocomedy and dysfunctional family-reunion uplift, "Some Guy Who Kills People" has handful of original elements, but does a neat job yanking familiar ones into one enjoyable low-key stew. Kevin Corrigan stars just like a former mental patient whose return to society coincides getting a grotesque murder spree concentrating on people who'd cajolled him. "Guy" might've won limited theatrical to create handful of previously, but recent underperformance of comparable exercises like "Defendor" and "Super" suggest the likeliest shops for your one will probably be home-format, where sales prospects look decent. Ryan Levin's script has 34-year-old Ken (Corrigan) living like the most selected-on kid in class. Really he's gone back there for further just like a high-school janitor, otherwise working for just about any boorish ice-cream shop boss (Lou Beatty Junior.). He still lives with mother (Karen Black), who never misses an chance to assist help remind him of his insufficiencies, and contains the identical best/only friend in co-worker Irv (Leo Fitzpatrick). Indeed, really the only factor that's changed between secondary school now is always that Ken spent a lot of the interim in the mental ward, driven inside the edge having a murky trauma glimpsed in recurrent flashbacks. A gifted if unappreciated artist, he draws comicbooks of a superhero leading to vengeance on people who evade justice. These characteristics seem to become going to existence via grisly local killings whose connecting up thread the Sheriff (Craig Bostwick, pretty funny) and Deputy (Eric Cost) are slow to uncover. Meanwhile, Ken's capacity to continually keep a merchant account so low it's undercover is threatened on two fronts: First, adopted Brit Stephanie (Lucy Davis) virtually badgers him into dating her. Second, 11-year-old Amy (Ariel Gade), a daughter he never understood he'd, appears likely to assign him the daddy role to be able to escape her fundamentalist stepfather. Amy seems borderline-irritatingly precocious and chipper until we understand it is really an act she's as much a social misfit as her biological pa. Ken progressively gets warm to individuals intrusive new associations, though erstwhile childhood friends keep dying, as well as the information beginning to suspect him. A measure up for helmer Jack Perez after several cheesy cable photos (like "Mega Shark versus. Giant Octopus"), "Some Guy" is definitely crafted, showing up in the right balance between ironic horror/noir-fantasy tropes, the comedy mostly in the deadpan improv vein, and several formulaic but well-acquired sentimentality. In the rare lead role, Corrigan is bullets, supporting thesps solid (though Black may have known as it lower just a little). Tech package is nicely switched.Camera (color, HD), Shawn Maurer editor, Chris Conlee music, Ben Zarai, David The kitchen music managers, Patrick Belton, Sanaz Lavaedian production designer, Zach Bangma art director, Oliver Dear costume designer, Vania Ouzounova visual effects supervisor, Dear appear, David Alvarez appear designers, Zarai, The kitchen re-recording mixer, Zarai supervisory appear editors, David Barber, Zarai assistant director, Cory Manley casting, Lisa Essary. Darren Aronofsky's Anti-Meth PSAs: Requiem Redux

Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream alone might’ve been enough to scare most folks away from hard drugs for forever, but it came out all the way back in 2000, when today’s teenagers were mere toddlers. So as part of the public service program The Meth Project, which seeks to educate (or at least frighten the bejeezus out of) would-be first-time drug users, Aronofsky stepped in to direct four TV spots highlighting the nightmarish consequences of meth use. BE SCARED, KIDS. Aronofsky’s new PSAs are fairly simple, sharing a few key elements: He begins in close-up on the faces of his young teen subjects in quiet slo-motion repose, confronting his potential viewer with a face that reflects their own. Then he pulls back as hell breaks loose, revealing the horrors that meth use can inflict upon the lives of promising, fresh-scrubbed young persons: Ghastly skin lesions, horrific suicide attempts, physical abuse of/by loved ones, emergency room freakouts. This is what the American Skins should’ve been like. Warning: Semi-disturbing. But that’s the point. The Meth Project is an ongoing campaign that previously tapped other high profile filmmakers to create spots. Each “Wave” of shorts approaches the subject with a theme or tagline, showcasing different styles. You can find an extensive collection of previous shorts by Aronofsky (Wave 3 & 6), Inception DP Wally Pfister (Wave 5), Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu (Wave 4), and Tony Kaye (Wave 1 & 2) at the Meth Project Foundation website. For more information on the campaign and new website, head to www.MethProject.org. [The Meth Project via Next Movie]

New Tintin Trailer Promises Even More Adventure, Burning Pirate Ships and Camels Than Before

Just when you thought that the trailers for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn couldn’t get any more action-packed, Paramount and Columbia have unveiled a brand new peak at the highly-anticipated motion capture 3-D film that will have you frantically etching the release date — December 23 in the U.S. — onto every available calendar surface. Just like you’ve already done for Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill. Video: MSN Exclusive: The Adventures of Tintin - trailer The Peter Jackson-produced blockbuster features Jamie Bell as the beloved Herg character Tintin as he meets Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) and embarks on a mystery adventure to find a sunken treasure left behind by Haddock’s ancestor. The latest trailer shows burning pirate ships rocking on a tumultuous sea, Haddock punching out an opponent before shaking hands with Tintin, the pair dodging (and creating) gunfire, clinging to a plane during a storm, riding camels, sailing on parachutes, chasing cars at high speed and gliding over a middle Eastern marketplace. Phew! Like the other trailers, this one is impressive — from the motion-cap character faces whose every expression is so realistic that it borders on the edge of creepy — to the impeccably directed action sequences that Spielberg told us at Comic-Con, he staged just as if he was filming a live action feature. I anticipate that I’ll still prefer my Spielberg-directed films to be live-action after seeing Tintin, but am willing to give this a shot. At long last, Tintin will premiere in theaters December 23 — approximately 30 years after Spielberg originally acquired the rights to the comic series. [via MSN]

They'd really loved the form as well as the storytelling, as well as the amounts were proven, to ensure that they mentioned we have to choose this!"Oren Uziel, mounted on mooted MK restarts for any very long time, will write the script, which Tancharoen promises will remain "familiar to individuals who've been carrying out a webisodes, and frequently is going to be its own movie. The bodyguard was adament there's, telling the attorney, Im very effective, mister. Chernoff wasn't convinced, questioning whether a few seconds was sufficient time for your dramatic sequence to see out. Alvarez assured him there's. The defense attorney also challenged Alvarezs recollection, asking when the range of the vials happened after paramedics had come and brought Jackson with a nearby hospital. Alvarez declined it happened after he referred to as 911. Chernoff requested why Alvarez didnt tell government physiques about Murrays instructions to bag within the medication right after Jackson died, but instead anxiously anxiously waited until two several days following a entertainers dying. The bodyguard mentioned he didnt realize its significance until going to a news report in the finish of June through which he recognized one of the bags detectives were undertaking of Jacksons mansion. The burly Alvarez increased being emotional since the 911 call was carried out for jurors. It's, Alvarez responded. Alvarezs testimony allowed Walgren to supply jurors directly getting a bottle of propofol that theyve heard much about with the previous a couple of days in the trial. Consider family films frequently gain traction on Saturday or sunday, Dolphin Tale -- from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros., exactly the same team behind The Blind Side -- could pull ahead. Still, Sony's Moneyball isn't any slouch and may search in. The film is drawing glowing notices, particularly for Pitt's performance, and it is reaping helpful benefits from strong interest among males and older women. PHOTOS: 'Moneyball' Premiere in Concord The weekend's two other films -- Rachelle Lefervre thriller Abduction and Jason Statham-Robert DeNiro action pic Killer Elite -- will be based heavily on night time business, so early returns make forecasts difficult. Universal Preps New Scarface Movie

EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures is developing a latest version of Scarface, the title first released in 1932 after which it changed into the legendary 1983 film that starred Al Pacino as Cuban gangster Tony Montana. I’d heard the studio remains meeting authors to script a need a movie which will be produced by Marc Shmuger and also the Global Produce banner along with Martin Bregman. Bregman produced the Pacino version. The film is not intended as a remake or possibly a follow-up. It may need typically the most popular aspects of the extremely first couple of films: an outsider, an immigrant, barges his distance towards the criminal establishment looking for a twisted version in the American dream, as being a kingpin using a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition. The studio is keeping the greater understanding about where the new Tony character arises from under systems at this time, but ethnicity and geography were crucial in the initial two versions. Inside the 1932 Scarface, an Italian (Paul Muni) needed over Chicago, too as with the John P Palma-directed remake, a Cuban cornered the cocaine trade in eighties Miami, only to be consumed due to it. Ann Dvorak, George Raft and Boris Karloff starred inside the original and Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio starred inside the remake. Does the legendary Universal library title Scarface deserve an up-to-date version for just about any new generation? I’m told that whenever Universal develop the 1983 film, there has been howls of heresy ultimately, the film was considered a Howard Hughes-produced classic, getting a script by Ben Hecht. Howard Hawks directed it with Richard Rosson. The remake increased being legendary within the own way, particularly in affecting on stylish-hop culture. Tony Montana’s image remains broadly merchandised his signature line “Say hello to my little friend’ remains finest selling cell phone voice ring-tone, and Universal has offered over hundreds of an incredible number of DVD models worldwide.

Cabaret

A Reprise Theater Company presentation of a musical in two acts with book by Joe Masteroff and music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Directed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge. Musical director and additional orchestrations, Christy Crowl; set, John Iacovelli; costumes, Kate Bergh, lighting, Jared A. Sayeg; sound, Philip G. Allen; associate choreographer, Bradley Benjamin; associate music director, Lloyd Cooper; music coordinator, Joe Soldo; technical director, Brad Enlow. Opened, reviewed Sept. 14, 2011. Runs through Sept. 25. Running time: 2 HOURS, 40 MIN.Clifford Bradshaw - Jeff McLean The Emcee - Bryce Ryness Fraulein Schneider - Mary Gordon Murray Herr Schultz - Robert Picardo Sally Bowles - Lisa O'Hare With: Zach Bandler, Mark C. Reis, Katrina Lenk, Aurore Joly, Katherine Malak, Janelle Junio, Bradley Benjamin, Brett Leigh, Jenna Coker-Jones, Rachel Crissman, Christopher Zenner, Josh Walden, Justin Michael Wilcox, Jonathan Mercer. They both have one word titles, beginning with the letter "c," and they were written by John Kander and Fred Ebb. "Cabaret," however, is not "Chicago." Marcia Milgrom Dodge directs the former as if it were all bright lights and windy city with flappers right out of the Roaring Twenties. When the Nazis finally make their belated appearance at the end of act one, you half expect cops with machine guns to raid the place. It's odd seeing a Berlin club turned into a speakeasy. Something of the reverse happened when Bob Fosse staged the original Broadway production of "Chicago" in 1975. Hot off the movie "Cabaret," he brought a "Blue Angel" look to the new Kander and Ebb show, with the girls wearing top hats and the boys swinging tassels from their nipples. Auds felt the disconnect and the show played only two years on Broadway. Today, in its current pared-down revival, the tuner is well into its 15th year. But back to "Cabaret" at Reprise. Sally Bowles (Lisa O'Hare) doesn't get to say "divine decadence" in Joe Masteroff's version, and that's not all that's missing underneath all the giddy good-times glare at the Freud Playhouse. Would somebody please turn up the dark?! John Iacovelli's gawdy set and Kate Bergh's sparkly costumes don't help. As for Dodge, she helmed a provincial Broadway revival of "Ragtime" in 2009, and she's no better with her actors or staging here. The Kit Kat Klub stage was the German world in Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall's definitive Roundabout production. Here, Dodge often separates the club from the outside with monolithic columns of curtains. Worse, what's happening either upstage or downstage is all brass band; there's no bronze finish. Forget about any patina of decay. O'Hare's strident Sally lacks vulnerability. Jeff McLean's wandering Clifford resembles one of those Joe College types William Haines played in a dozen silent movies before he became Hollywood's favorite interior decorator. But it's hard to believe that this Christopher Isherwood stand-in has ever been east of Omaha, much less seen London, Venice and now Berlin. As the Emcee, Bryce Ryness is blessed with a face that Grosz could love. Otherwise, he's pretty much a standard-issue Emcee, epicene and oily, but he does have a couple of great silent moments: When he's not performing, he turns into a different man entirely. We can't quite tell what kind of man, but considering the environment outside the club doors, he's probably not into just collecting china. In Dodge's cartoon Kit Kat Klub, the dancers' crossdressing and the gay boys' flirtations and Sally's promiscuity are all just so many cute distractions to drown out the Nazi noise. (Act one ends with the cliche of a Hitler harangue over the loudspeakers.) Nowhere is there any indication that Berlin cabarets were one of the few places left in Germany to be free. When the Nazis arrive, it's pretty much just to clean up the joint. Contact Robert Hofler at bob.hofler@variety.com
